Tulip Gall Mite Treatment for Flower Bulbs
The Problem: Tulip Gall Mites and Their Impact
Tulip gall mites pose a significant threat to flower bulbs, affecting the bulb, root system, and flower. These microscopic pests not only cause visible damage but also act as vectors for Tulip Virus X (TVX), which can spread to other crops like grain. Research by Kock et al. (2008) confirmed that gall mites are the primary carriers of TVX.
Beyond plant health concerns, tulip gall mite infestations can lead to export restrictions due to direct bulb damage and disease transmission. As a result, effective treatment is crucial for both flower bulb quality and compliance with international trade regulations.
Challenges in Mite Control
Historically, chemical treatments like Actellic-50 were used to manage mites in stored flower bulbs. However, this method has been banned since 2014. Alternative insecticides like Movento and Batavia have been used since 2013, but they are set to be phased out by 2025. The approval for Apollo, a miticide used in immersion treatments, is also expiring.
With chemical pesticide restrictions increasing, growers are seeking sustainable, effective alternatives for controlling tulip gall mites.
Our Solutions: Effective Tulip Gall Mite Control
At Insect-Treatment.com, we offer two advanced, chemical-free treatments to eliminate tulip gall mites:
1. ULO Treatment (Ultra Low Oxygen)
Ultra Low Oxygen (ULO) treatment is a proven method that effectively eliminates gall mites by:
- Lowering oxygen levels to deprive mites of essential air.
- Controlled temperature adjustments to enhance the treatment’s effectiveness.
This process requires a gas-tight storage room and a nitrogen generator to maintain the ideal low-oxygen environment. This treatment should be performed 2 times with an intervall of several days.
2. CATT Treatment (Controlled Atmosphere Temperature Treatment)
CATT treatment builds on ULO technology by incorporating CO₂ adjustments, making it even more effective. This method includes:
- Low oxygen levels, just like ULO.
- Controlled temperature increase to accelerate mite elimination.
- Increased CO₂ concentration to further enhance treatment efficiency.
This CATT treatment will solve the infectation in a single treatment which will have less logistical costs.
